UPLIFT

COPENHAGEN, DENMARK

A cultural center that acts as an architectural museum and public design school. Through its function as a museum and center of learning, individuals leave the building with a greater appreciation for the built enviroment, uplifting individuals through inspiration and expanding their knowledge of architecture. The form emulates this idea of uplift as the structure builds and morphs from the ground until it meets the sky. Exterior supports are pointed as it meets the sky to encapsulate the idea of penetrating and pushing beyond what perceived boundaries people may have, just as education challenges individuals to push their boundaries.

CONCEPT DEVELOPMENT

Understanding the application of design choices.

CONTEXTUAL STUDIES

Looking at the surrounding region, I was able to draw inspiration through the forms created by the existing built enviroment. I knew that I wanted my form to highlight characteristics of framing, perspective, and verticality.

FORM DEVELOPMENT

I then applied my findings through study models to see what type of were created when each concept was applied to a 3-D space. I eventually developed a form that consisted of three pillars which would grab individuals attention and draw them near to investigate.

SORROUNDING ENVIROMENT

The project has the benefit of being adjacent to a canal network used by pedestrians. I took into consideration how people would move through the space, as well as the solar access that the structure had to try and capitalize on daylighting and solar heat gain.

APPROACH TO EXTERIOR

After studying how people interact with the site and several weeks of development, I was able to blend the form and function of the structure and arrive at my proposal. I decided to overhang the building beyond the site limits to create a dynamic enviroment and again encourage interaction with pedestrians to investigate the museum.

SYSYSTEMS AND STRUCTURE

Pushing a concept into the realms of reality.

CONSTRUCTION TECHNIQUE

A majority of the structure is built with prefabricated concrete panels, the façade consists of stamped concrete. On the top floor an operable shading device can be found within a curtain wall following a majority of the perimeter of the structure.

STRRUCTURAL ISOMETRIC

The building is framed with wide flange beams. In order top allow for the structure to overhang far beyond the site boundary, a system of counterweight beams was implemented to act similarly to how suspension bridges allow for larger overhangs.

SUSTAINABLE SYSTEMS

Key features of the structure include the integration of an existing geothermal network within Copenhagen, a solar panel array, Light shelves, permeable pavers, and a high efficiency mechanical system. during the summer months, the structure is able to naturally ventilate through its curtain wall on the upper floor.

LIGHTING STUDY

Diagrams depicting how daylight penetrates through the upper floor,  light shelves allow the light to continue deeper into the space.
